Lady Harimaguada

Lady Harimaguada

Lady Harimaguada, the award received by the winners of the International Film Festival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is a replica in miniature of the sculpture that local artist Martín Chirino made in 1995. It is awarded in three categories: the Golden Lady Harimaguada, to the Spanish distributor of the winning film (with a prize of EUR 100,000), the Silver Lady Harimaguada to the Spanish distributor of the winning film (with a prize of EUR 35,000) and the Honorific Lady Harimaguada, in bronze.

The original sculpture can be seen on Avenida Marítima, in the city of Las Palmas, where it has remained o since it was first inaugurated on 29th November 1996. The location, the material used -white-painted steel- and the size of the sculpture, 11 x 5 x 6 metres, have led it to be admired by both the inhabitants of Las Palmas and visitors to the city.

The sculptor's original reference was the group of the three Fates (Moirai), recumbent sculptures in the tympanum of the Parthenon in Greece, while also representing the first approach to the Mediterranea, also recumbent figures in gentle repose. Over the centuries reference was made to them in Etruscan sculpture, as well as the works of Rodin, Clará, Maillot, i.e. all sculptures in white marble.

The critic Domingo Pérez Minik (1903-1989), at a meeting of architects, concluded that it was a recumbent figure with an undoubtedly female morphology and that, because of its morphology and posture, it appeared to be a 'Lady'. This English denomination became popular and Chirino himself adopted it in acknowledgement of the observation by this outstanding Canaries figure.
