Film Festivals are always conceived of as a chance, whether explicitly stated or not, of transforming a city for one week into a small Mecca of cinema. However, nowadays, the role of film festivals is also to allow for the survival of creative, independent film.

The International Film Festival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ran for the first time at the beginning of the 21st century, in the year 2000, and can be proud of having lived up to its expectations, as a defender of creative and independent productions, outside the mainstream.

Films that then appeared bizarre or marginal in Spain are now firmly inserted in the established culture of quality productions of the seventh art, although the films presented in our Festival have always somehow ‘trespassed’ frontiers and categoriies (between experimental and narrative, between North and South, between East and West, between the image and the word, between fiction and non-fiction) and are aimed at free-thinking and active spectators.

From this need to share with us their ‘secret worlds’ or ‘clandestine film’, a whole new promise has been born and confidence renewed in the often pessimistically-viewed future of the seventh art ...
