PRESS CONFERENCE BY PIA MARAIS, DIRECTOR OF THE UNPOLISHED

The screening of the film The Unpolished, which is a participant in the official competition section of the 8th Edition of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival, will take place on Monday 19th at 09.00 in the Multicines Monopol. Later, at 11.00, in the Gabinete Literario, the director Pia Marais will pose for the press and then, at 11.15, the CICCA will be the setting for the press conference.

Pia Marais was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her father was a crazy actor who trained at RADA and was a descendant of French Huguenots and English colonists who had settled in South Africa. Her mother was Swedish and was responsible for the sanity in her education. She started studying sculpture and then went on to photography before realising that, in view of the narrative nature of what she was doing, the cinema would be the best media. Having studied at the Chelsea School of Art (London), The Rietveld Akademie (Amsterdam) and KunstAkademie (Düsseldorf), she then went on to study at the Deutsche Film- und FernsehAkademie (DFFB) in Berlin. After several contacts with the world of movies as a casting director, assistant director and writer, she shot Die Unerzogenen (The Unpolished), her first feature, winner of the VPRO Tiger Award at the recent Rotterdam Film Festival.

The Unpolished is a story about a girl trapped in the complicated world of adults. A world in which the roles of children and parents have disappeared and the responsibilities are handed on from one to another.
